The Films To Be Screened Are:-

Lady for a Night

At 11.00am– LADY FOR A NIGHT (1942– 87 minutes– Black and White) starring  John Wayne. Joan Blondell, Philip Merivale, Blanche Yurka, Ray Middleton- Directed by Leigh Jason.

The unlikely combination of John Wayne and Joan Blondell adds a bit of vinegar and spice to the costume drama Lady for a Night. Blondell is cast as Jenny Blake, owner of the Memphis Belle-not a WW2 bomber, but a gambling ship moored just outside New Orleans. Jenny's partner and erstwhile suitor is local political boss Jack Morgan (Wayne). She loves Morgan, but decides to marry for money and prestige, and to that end weds "black sheep" socialite Alan Alderson (Ray Middleton). Her new in-laws are infuriated by this marriage of convenience, and do everything they can to ruin Jenny in the eyes of society. When Alderson dies suddenly, his vengeful mother Julia (Blanche Yurka) accuses Jenny of poisoning her husband.

Throughout the subsequent trial and scandal, Morgan stands loyally by Jenny's side, convincing her at long last that he's been the "right man" for her all along. Hattie Noel, who two years earlier lost the role of Mammy in Gone with the Wind to Hattie McDaniel, essays a neat Mammy-like characterization as Jenny's all-knowing maidservant

12.30 Lunch Time and Memorabilia Room Open until 2.15pm Raffle Prize Draw

At 2.30pm TRUE GRIT 50th Anniversary Tribute Screening (1969) in Full HD  (128 Minutes-Colour) Starring John Wayne, Kim Darby, Glen Campbell, Robert Duvall, Jeff Corey, Dennis Hopper, Strother Martin and John Fiedler- Directed by Henry Hathaway.

Mattie Ross from Darnell and Yell County, Arkansas (personified by Kim Darby) has come to Fort Smith seeking the killer  (Jeff Corey) of her father . It turns out he's also killed a State Senator in Texas so Texas Ranger La Boeuff (Glen Campbell) informs her. Both of them team up with United States Marshal Rooster Cogburn who resides in Fort Smith with Chin Lee and his cat, General Sterling Price. Corey is now in the outlaw band headed by Robert Duvall at large in the Indian Nation Territory that became Oklahoma. True Grit's plot is the trio's pursuit of Duvall, Corey and the rest of the gang.

TRUE GRIT 50th Anniversary Tribute

But oddly enough True Grit isn't really about plot. It's about the creation of a character. Like Margaret Mitchell who wrote Gone With the Wind with Clark Gable in mind for Rhett Butler, Charles Portis wrote the novel True Grit with only John Wayne in mind as Rooster Cogburn. It must have been one singular delight for Charles Portis to see the Duke flesh out Rooster Cogburn exactly as he conceived him. Tough old Rooster, likes an occasional drink, isn't above a little larceny, but has one stern moral code about real bad guys. Bring him in dead or alive and make sure you shoot first coming up against them. And he's got quite the colorful past as he relates tales of his younger days to Campbell and Darby on the trail.
