Arizona 1931

At 11.00am - ARIZONA (1931) (70 Minutes-Black and White) Starring John Wayne, Laura La Plante, June Clyde, Forrest Stanley and Nino Quartero . Directed by George B. Seitz-

ARIZONA Melodramatic soap opera about a young lady named Evelyn (Laura La Plante) who is in love with West Point football hero Bob Denton (John Wayne) - unfortunately for her, he's somewhat of a brash ladies man, who says, and these are his very words, "My women understand me - they take one look and know they can expect nothing". Hmmm, well she doesn't seem to understand that and expects to marry him - but he dumps her when he realizes how serious she is about him.

So she sets out to get even by actually marrying Bob's boyhood guardian (without Bob's knowledge) and moving to Arizona with the poor older man who is completely clueless about her former relationship. Soon Bob is assigned a post there and stirs things up when he begins a romance with Evelyn's flirtatious sister (June Clyde). When he takes a shine to her sister Bonita, Evelyn accuses him of making illicit advances toward her while the Colonel's away. The Colonel asks for Denton's resignation.

12.10 Lunch Time and Memorabilia Room Open until 1.25pm Raffle Prize Draw

The Alamo The Directors Cut

At 1.35pm The Alamo - The Directors Cut (1960) (201 Minutes– Part 1- 95 Minutes– Part 2 -106 Minutes-Colour) Starring John Wayne, Richard Widmark, Laurence Harvey, Frankie Avalon, Chill Wills, Patrick Wayne, Linda Cristal, Richard Boone, Ken Curtis, Hank Worden, Denver Pyle and Joan O’Brien. Produced and Directed by John Wayne-

The story of the historic 1836 battle in the Texan War of Independence. Facing 4,000 Mexican troops, 186 Texan soldiers and volunteers - including William Travis, Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie retreat within the walls of the Alamo, a Franciscan mission that was converted into a military fort. Once inside, the men prepare themselves for what will be a bloody battle to the death. Very much a personal crusade, he raised the $12m budget partially from a trio of Texas millionaires and from his own pocket.

The set and surrounding village were actually built three years before shooting, ostensibly so that vegetation could grow naturally around it, though problems raising the budget seem more likely. Nonetheless, the film's much-trumpeted great pains to look authentic extends to the casting, enhanced by some of the great faces in the supporting cast, not least of them the irreplaceable Hank Worden, replacing Old Mose Harper's desire for a rockin' chair for 'the time to live and a place to die' in one of his best perfoances as the Parson. Laurence Harvey, a man reputedly in life as innately impossible to like as his character in The Manchurian Candidate, carries the dramatic element as Travis more than efficiently, while Wayne and Widmark give perfect demonstrations of fleshing out a part through star quality as Davey Crockett and Jim Bowie.

Original THE ALAMO Mexican Soldiers Uniforms to be exhibited at the JWFS ALAMO Convention on Saturday October 15th, 2016

To coincide with the screening of THE ALAMO at our October 2016 Convention, we will also have on display a couple of Original Mexican Infantry and Foot soldiers Uniforms that were actually used and worn during the production of John Wayne’s film. The Uniforms originally came from the Hollywood costumiers WESTERN COSTUME COMPANY on Melrose Avenue. These authentic Uniforms are showing a little wear, but after 55 years spent in storage and the use that they would have had during the shooting of the film’s battle sequences, it comes as no surprise.

The Convention will be a great way of seeing the complete Roadshow version of the Film on a large screen and at the same time, view some of the Original uniforms which were used in the Film’s production.
